Life Goals 101
Have you ever wondered if your thoughts are what drag you down? While everyone experiences negative thoughts, some people allow those thoughts to drag them down in a dramatic fashion.
Your negative thoughts might be related to your weight, it could be that you just don’t like how you look or that you’re sure someone else will beat you to that promotion you’ve been chasing. You may be overly concerned that your colleagues dislike you.
Whatever it is, there is one thing you can be sure of. Your negative thoughts are likely over-dramatizing it. Your negative self-talk isn’t a true reflection of the situation at hand. It’s exaggerated and dragging you down.
A bad mood can cause you to withdraw from the people you love. It could lead you to throw in the towel on something you’ve been working hard on. It doesn’t need to be like that, though. You don’t have to let those negative thoughts drag you down.
How Negative Thoughts Damage You
You probably know someone who immediately jumps to the worst case scenario. It might be more difficult to recognize in yourself, but when others do it they stand out like a sore thumb. You probably roll your eyes and dismiss them.
Do you notice it when it’s you that does it, though? How do you feel and respond when people say negative things about you?
Do you take that harder when you say it about yourself?
There’s a good chance you do unless they say negative things that you already believe about yourself. That will only serve to amplify the negative thoughts.
Why is it that it seems much worse when we think these things about ourselves? Because at your very core, you are telling yourself the worst case scenario. You are telling yourself the worst stories about yourself and it’ is dragging you down.
When other people say negative things they do so because they have their own insecurities. It might be that you’re their competition, so you’re over what others say about you. What you really think about yourself, though that can hurt. deeply.
So, how can you beat the negative thought cycle from dragging you down? Your brain has the power to make you think bad thoughts.
There’s good news, though, because that means that it is also powerful enough to halt those thoughts. You can retrain (or trick) your brain into positive thinking. If your thought process is causing your life disruptions, then it’s time to get them under control before they drag you all the way down.
Change Your Brain
The first step to changing the habit is finding a distraction. Consider when your brain kicks itself into high gear with negative thoughts. You will easily detect a pattern, it’s usually when you try to get to sleep when you have a quiet moment.
When you’re busy engaging your brain, it’s more difficult for the brain to kick in with negative thoughts. So, when you notice negative thoughts find a way to actively distract from them. That may be listening to music, singing or picking up a book.
You can also consciously think of one to three positive thoughts for every negative one. This can help balance the negatives and banish them with positives. It works with any type of negative thought, but especially if you’re being hard on yourself.
So, if you think you’re overweight, think about three positive things about your body. If your mind is telling you that you’ve done nothing with your life, think of three achievements you have.
Try to surround yourself with positive people. If there are really negative people in your life, try to avoid spending time with them, that can rub off on you.
You can also write out your negative thoughts and then tear them up, burn them or just throw them in the trash.
Remember all happening in this world of ten thousand things is merely an illusion, and a persistent illusion is sometimes called reality. Make all the illusions deliberately beneficial to you and not drag you down.
